This weekend was a good one! We enjoyed time with Mema and Grandpa, snuck in a night out with Prosecco and froyo (combo of champions), got out on the boat, hit up a friend’s birthday party and I even napped a little thanks to Kaitlyn’s new enjoyment of waking up throughout the night. I’m getting that under control right now though and grateful that it seems to be going really well!
By the way, that’s the best picture you can get when asking 3 toddlers to please stop eating cake to smile at the camera.
Moving on…
While restocking our fridge yesterday, I made the mistake of hitting up 3 different spots. I’m realizing I don’t have time for that anymore, but it’s frustrating that I can find everything I’m after at one spot. I can’t wait for our Whole Foods to open. #thingshealthnutssay I know it’s considered Whole Paycheck by many, but I can actually keep our bill lower there than I can bouncing around to all the different stores. Plus, a one stop shop with a baby and toddler in tow is much appreciated!
So, how’d this week fare?
I first hit up Josh’s Farmers Market.
I opted for the larger milk this week and returned 3 bottles I previously had (love that they buy back bottles!).
Total: $15.77
Then I headed to Lowe’s Foods because it was close by and I was impressed by their organic options at my last visit. (Click on image to make it larger)
Total: $119.37
I found most of what I needed, but they didn’t have organic steak that wasn’t frozen, Kerrygold butter or frozen breakfast burritos. I contemplated grabbing those items later in the week, but didn’t want to find time to fit in a return grocery store trip, so I made a quick run by Harris Teeter.
Total: $28.80
Grand Total: $163.94
My weekly bill seems to be trending upwards! I know the organic meats really add up quickly and I’m opting for fancy beers like Lagunitas, so it will be interesting to see where our monthly total ends up.
Last night I used a simmer sauce I’ve had in the pantry and found it pretty tasty for an easy weeknight dinner option
Plus sprinkling cilantro on anything makes it look fancy.
I’m looking forward to a crockpot meal tonight for ease and for coaxing fall to start heading our way. With football and Labor Day this coming weekend, I’m ready for some relief from the 90s and humidity!
Until then, you can find me eating my fill of farmers market tomatoes before they are replaced by apples and pumpkins.
What is your favorite summer food?
Karen says
Ice cream or fresh veggies…..it’s a hard choice.
Al says
Okay. Kerrygold. Tell me about this. Some sort of special butter? Does it taste like real butter or the fake stuff? Why do you buy it? You have mentioned it many times before and I haven’t asked. And what about the butter from Josh’s? (By the way, they should pay you for advertising for them weekly!)
Brittany Dixon says
Kerry gold is the REAL stuff so it tastes like the real stuff. It’s made from milk from grass-fed cows and I really like the taste. No fillers. I haven’t really checked out the butter at Josh’s, though I totally should! Do you buy it?

Quite an energetic start this morning, highlighting a fun weekend and healthy food choices , embellished with a little Lagunitas! Thank you for continually reminding me to eat wisely, with rare but moderate excesses!

Sounds like you had a fun weekend!! I wonder if that Tikki Masla sauce could work in a meat free dish like cauliflower and chickpeas or something. It sounds tasty!
Brittany Dixon says
It totally would! Using chickpeas with the veggies would be delicious!

Awww sounds like a lovely weekend. I think that is the best you would have been able to get if you asked me to smile for a photo while I was eating cake….let alone toddlers….this is cake!!! Waaaay more important 😉 You are doing awesome with your grocery budget, love the look of that curry sauce! Favorite summer food…whats in my hand right now; a peach 🙂
Monica says
Potato salad or pasta salad is my favorite summer treat. I usually love it with a veggie burger or veggie hot dog on the grill. Also, corn on the cob is a summer love.
Christina says
My best friend came over for dinner last night, and along with hamburgers and corn on the grill, we made a watermelon, tomato, feta and mint salad – it was like summer in a bowl. So good!
Brittany Dixon says
I’ve always wanted to try the watermelon, mint and feta combo but haven’t gotten the nerve. It sounds so strange but I know people love it!
Christine says
I love those breakfast burritos!!! My favorites are the chicken sausage and the turkey sausage ones! At one point half our freezer was filled with them because I had one every morning…my husband told me I was obsessed, haha. He didn’t understand why I kept buying them even though we had some in our freezer, hahaha. I’ve since cut down to maybe one or two a month as a treat.
Brittany Dixon says
Haha, oh I feel ya! I love them too but try to save them for David to grab on early mornings. I really need to make my own because they certainly add up buuuuut YUM 😉
Rachel says
I recently asked Harris Teeter why they don’t stock grass fed steak because ours only has grass fed ground beef. They said it’s too expensive..? So I wonder if it’s a regional thing since yours clearly has it.
Brittany Dixon says
Well, ours only has the exact one pictured above! It’s prepackaged (as you can see) and EXPENSIVE. It’s $17.99 for the one I have pictured, but was on sale for $12.99. I’m not sure if they will keep it around or not because I can’t imagine too many people buying it at full price.
