I’m playing along with WIAW today because I haven’t done a food diary in a while. Let’s start in my kitchen and what the scene looks like every morning around 8:15.
Smoothie: almond milk, protein, half a banana, peanut butter and oops- out of spinach.
I’ve been on such a smoothie kick. Reasons being that Hailey loves pushing the buttons, I get to play with my new blender (to justify the purchase in my mind!), it tastes like I’m drinking a milkshake for breakfast and those suckers keep me full until I eat lunch.
We packed up and headed to Davidson for Kaitlyn’s well visit, but arrived early and decided to wander around.
I think Davidson is the cutest and we couldn’t not wander into Summit Coffee, an always-bustling adorable little coffee house.
Iced unsweet green tea for me and a breakfast cookie to share with Hailey.
A picnic by the playground took us right up to appointment time.
The appointment went well and we got Kaitlyn’s stats (my favorite!). She is now 22.5” long (90th percentile) and weighs 9 lbs 3 ounces (50th percentile). Not too shabby at all for my previous little peanut!
PS- her hair is starting to fall out a little. Sniffle!
Once back home I high fived myself for taking time to do meal prep on Sunday.
It’s my first time making salad in a jar and I must say I’m a BIG fan. I think I’ll be adding these into my typical Sunday prep. Since lunches have been the hardest for me to manage since having two kids (Hailey is usually tired and floppy by lunch time and Kaitlyn usually wants to eat too), it’s amazing to be able to just grab one of these and have a fresh meal ready to go.
Spinach, chickpeas, carrots, green onions, red peppers, cucumber, goat cheese and Italian dressing.
Later that afternoon came lunch part 2.
Homemade farmers market veggie tomato soup. With sprinkled red pepper flakes.
Full disclosure: this recipe creation was supposed to be a sauce. It totally can be used that way (I’ve been mixing it with brown rice for Hailey’s dinner), but I like it so much I’m eating it as soup. It’s packed full of fresh veggies!
The afternoon flew by with a little help from markers. The best part of having kids? Getting to play like a kid yourself. I mean, when is the last time you just sat down and colored?
I’m quite proud of my giraffe… minus his face. Clearly I don’t know what a giraffe face is supposed to look like.
David was gone all evening for work so by the time I had both girls fed and asleep, I was starving. I heated up leftovers but didn’t take the time to make it pretty. Hunger won.
Leftover enchiladas with all the fixins.
Unpictured: a bite of Hailey’s uneaten cheese, a handful of tortilla chips and 2 olives.
Food diaries: yay or nay?
Do you keep them yourself?
Do you like seeing them on here?

I really like seeing what others are eating since it gives me inspiration and ideas. That smoothie looks amazing…I haven’t been feeling smoothies lately as I’ve been on a banana oat kick lately. Maybe today I will change the habit!! 🙂

I like that your food diary also talks just as much about your activities for the day, so it’s not just a bunch of pictures of food. I enjoy reading them! Mostly just as a glimpse into your adorable life 🙂
Becky@TheSavedRunner says
I don’t normally keep a food diary, but sometimes I do take pictures of what I eat so that I can share it on my blog. I do like seeing food that other people eat because it gives me good ideas! And I am very impressed with your giraffe picture! Mine would not have looked anything like that lol!

I have seen those salads in a jar all over pinterest, but I have never tried them myself. They look awesome.
I am still envious of your blender! My little NutriBullet is pretty good, but I still long for a Blentec or Vitamix. I have to visit the Vitamix display every time I go to Costco…LOL.
Food diaries – it depends. When trying to lose weight, they can be extremely helpful (team Weight Watchers here). Ever heard that saying “what gets measured gets managed?” That is how I view food diaries. It allows you to pay extra attention to what you are consuming. But there may be times when that isn’t completely necessary. My ultimate goal is to be able to eat intuitively and really build on the healthy habits I have started to maintain a healthy weight.
Kaitlyn too precious! I think she is looking like her mama so far.

I love your food diaries! They are especially fun when combined with a day in the life. Also, will you do a post on your salad in a jar? How do you get them to keep?
Brittany Dixon says
I definitely will. This is my experimental week so I’m waiting to report back until I’ve tried it for myself 🙂

Especially since we are in similar boats (I just our second baby on June 2nd and we have an almost 2 year old son) I love seeing what you eat and how your days go.
I always smile at your posts when I see your Boppy Lounger because we have the same one. Its SO great and I wish we’d had one with our son!
Laura @ Mommy Run Fast says
Aww, Kaitlyn is growing so fast! I love the salad in a jar idea… I’ve been meaning to try it, too. Great idea for post-baby meal prep!

Salad in a jar question…what makes it better then putting it into regular tupperware? Just that it’s more “green” or does it keep the veggies more crisp and keep them from getting soggy before you get to eating the salad? Thought about trying it but wondering what the benefit of the jar vs tupperware is because previously when i have make salads for my lunches they are soggy messes within a couple days.
Thanks 🙂
Brittany Dixon says
For one, it looks pretty 😉
Haha, but in all honesty I think it does help keep things fresh because of the layering (dressing at the bottom, followed by heartier veggies, lettuce/spinach on top). I’m only on day 3 so I am still waiting to report back after day 5, but so far they have been really fresh!
Jaclyn @ BumpSweat says
Aren’t salads in a jar the best?!? I used to make them all the time but somehow forgot (blame it on pregnancy brain). I’ll need to keep that in mind for when baby comes. I love that you shared your food diary with us; I see it as a fun way to share food/meal ideas.
Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries says
Hey, you took the time to assemble those cute little bowls with the toppings with your enchiladas, and that’s more than I would’ve ever done. 😉 I like to see the little glimpses into your life like this. I like the food aspect of it to give me ideas, but I also love seeing what you’re up to throughout the day.

I really like seeing other people’s food diaries – I find myself getting so many good ideas! I, however, am terrible about keeping a food diary and taking pictures, and right now would be too embarrassed to share what I ate for the day. Perhaps it would motivate to me eat better if I kept track of what I was eating. 😉 At least it was smoothie morning at our house, so I know I got in several helpings of fruits and veggies that way! My toddler is also a huge fan of the blender. 😉

I really like these posts especially because it’s not just pictures. I actually love all your posts – one of my favorite blogs!! 🙂
I’m curious if the salads in a jar get soggy at all? They look delicious!!
Brittany Dixon says
Heyyyy thanks!! 🙂
So far I’m only on day 3 of salads, but they havent been soggy in the least! I’ll write more once I get through day 5!
Ali says
I don’t usually do food diaries although I think it’s really helpful for weight loss and realizing what you ate all day.

I don’t normally keep food diaries, but on the days I do (for the blog!), I do love it. I’ll have to do more WIAW-style posts in the future. Love your drawing/colouring skills. I used to be an art student…don’t know what happened! haha
I have yet to try salad in a jar, but it’s been something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately!
Jen says
LOVE the salad in a jar idea, I must do this! Umm Hadley and Kaitlyn are the same height, but Hadley weighs 4lbs. more — oops! Haha. Kaitlyn is SO adorable!
Brittany Dixon says
We’re working on catching up with Hadley! I love her precious baby rolls. It’s taking a little time since we started at 6 lb 10 ounces, but watch out, nursing now trying to play catch up! 😉

food diaries are great for people just starting out but i think they can be hard for those who get obsessive. that smoothie made me crave chocolate milk for some reason…weird!! the salad looks great!
Lauren @ Fun, Fit and Fabulous! says
I love seeing what others eat (especially busy moms). It gives me inspiration. I haven’t jumped on the salad in a jar band wagon and I really think I should. I’ll have to give it a try next week. Yours look delicious!
Matt @ Runner Savvy says
I’ve never kept a food diary!
Kelli H (Made in Sonoma) says
I like keeping a mental food diary for the day to make me aware of what I’m eating, but I don’t like writing it down. I think it can make some people obsess over what they eat. Since I usually eat an 80% healthy diet I try not to worry about it.

Salad in a jar – what a great idea! It’s been warm here in London (it’s WImbledon season, where is the rain??) and frankly, neither Hubby nor I have been too crazy for a big dinner. Tiredness is a key factor so we’ve been salad-ing it pretty much every day. Last night’s dinner was, ahem, baguette, Pringles crisps, followed by ice cream. Though Hubby did have some sliced tomatoes too. 🙂
Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl says
Your giraffe is mostly definitely awesome!! 😉
Joni says
I really enjoy these, also just what to see what a day in the life is like 🙂 Question – how do you run your blender with the noise?! It always scares my daughter when she was tiny, and now that she’s 9 months, I’ve started using it when she’s around but she still gets so scared! It’s too funny. Does it bother Kaitlyn at all?
Brittany Dixon says
Kaitlyn will actually sleep through it, even if she’s in the kitchen with me haha! It’s unreal because it’s SO loud. I remember warning Hailey when she was younger by saying, ok, I’m going to push the button and it’s going to go JJJJJJjjjjJJJJ!!! (made a loud noise). It seemed to help? Or at least made me sound like a crazy person 😉
