Let’s face it, finding ways to keep our homeschoolers motivated can be a harsh charge. Dealing with rowdy children and sullen teenagers is all part of a homeschool parents’ day, but having to resort to constant begging or heightened tempers for our children to complete their daily assignments aren’t necessarily the most valuable techniques for motivation.
The entire process of motivating our children to be excited and engaged in their learning can eventually take its toll on even the most seasoned homeschool parent. But, do not despair; we have all been in this motivational deficit at some point during our homeschooling experiences.
Fortunately, there are many wonderful ways that you can inspire your homeschoolers daily, so they’ll be begging you to give them more work! Well, maybe not begging exactly, but definitely more excited and engaged in their schoolwork.
Stay Calm, Cool, & Collected
Every homeschool parent loses their cool at some point; it is a natural emotion to become frustrated and even angry with our kids while we are trying to teach them important lessons. However, losing your cool is not only bad for your health, but it is also detrimental to a positive learning environment for your kids. Some children shut down when tensions flare, making it more difficult to re-engage them in the lessons once you’ve cooled off.
Still, others may lose interest in the educational process altogether if they see your frustrations with them. If you need to take a time-out to gather yourself, that is far better than melting down in front of your students.
Invite Participation In The Process Of Learning
Even though the slogan ‘Just Do It’ may be effective in channeling an overcoming attitude, it can have a negative impact on kids in an educational setting. As parents, there are definitely times when we need our children to just listen to us and do as we ask, but we must resist that temptation as homeschoolers.
Education is about learning, and learning is a process. Invite your children to be a part of their studies and assignments by including them in active discussions. Talk with your child about why homework is essential to their learning and listen to what they have to say. When your kids are active participants in their educational process, they will naturally be more motivated.
Take A Break From Rigorous Lessons
Everyone needs a break from the pressures of teaching and learning, especially families who homeschool. Increase your child’s motivation for learning by taking breaks from the lesson plans and engaging in active learning scenarios. Make education fun by planning field trips, baking, creating family projects, gardening, and any other activity to introduce educational elements into fun for everyone.
Remember, you chose to homeschool to have the freedom to decide how your child is educated. When you are motivated, your children will be as well.
