Yesterday was all about the first trimester food. There were a lot of questions about the soft serve ice cream. There are definitely mixed opinions on this one, but studies have shown that if the soft serve machine isn’t cleaned properly, it can harvest listeria bacteria. Listeria (also why you have to avoid deli meats) is 20% more likely to be contracted by pregnant women (according to the CDC). The scary part is not only will you get sick, but can infect your baby causing miscarriage, premature delivery, infection and sometimes death.

Now, I will say, as soon as your pregnant you begin to see warnings about everything, and there’s no way you can avoid everything, so ‘just do your best’ has been my motto. I’m choosing (completely personal choice) to avoid everything I can on the “possible danger” list, just because I know me and I know I will blame myself if anything is wrong with the baby. But, I’m not perfect…

I had bad back aches around week 7-8 and Hubbs had a great idea to use a little Tiger Balm on my back. Wow- it felt great. However as soon as it was applied, my sensors popped up- can this harm the baby? Frantic googling ensued, and mixed opinions said to stay away from Tiger Balm, so I immediately jumped in the shower and scrubbed my back raw in an attempt to get it all off. Does this make me a little crazy? Maybe. But I’m trying to play things as safely as possible.

I also have done away with any facial soap, products or lotions that contain any salicylic acid of benzoyl peroxide. But that’s just me!

Now exercise… spring has sprung- yay!

Meaning I can get outside and MOVE. The day I found out I was pregnant, I had just proclaimed my goal to run a 10k to all of you. Seriously, I announced it to you in the morning, and found out I was expecting that afternoon! Well, being a first time pregnant lady and a nervous nellie, I decided I shouldn’t be training during this time. So between lower back pains and carrying a bean around in my belly, I decided to stop jogging.

I kept up with walks- about 30 minutes everyday – and then would sit and relax while Koda ran her heart out.

But a few weeks ago I had had enough. I missed real exercise. Who knew that could happen to ME?? So since I was beginning to feel more confident in my pregnancy, I brought back the WOG!

So my new routine looks like this:

Monday – 31 minute wog

Tuesday- 1 hour of prenatal yoga

Wednesday – 31 minute wog

Thursday – light, easy walk with Koda

Friday – wog

So far, it’s worked out wonderfully. Did you know when you’re pregnant that you blood volume increases by 40-50%?! It does, which means your heart rate shoots up more quickly. I’m being very careful to warm up, and listen to my body. Also, when it gets warmer, I’ll be sure to stay hydrated and monitor my temperature- making sure I don’t get too hot.

I know, I know, where is the strength training? Well, yoga counts. My arms and legs are sore the next day, so it counts. And I try and throw in some random pushups and lunges (not 184!) in between. It’s enough for me for now 🙂

And without further adieu, yes, I am starting to show. Here’s the proof :

6 weeks:
