I’m beginning to accept that this is real and I have it. I don’t think it’s a problem, per se, but it sure makes it difficult to reach any long-term fitness goals.
For example, I broke up with running back in June. From there, I’ve been all about the yoga. I nailed crow a few times and came close to holding a handstand by myself. I had visions of bird of paradise and scorpion… but now I haven’t been in two weeks. With Hailey’s new school schedule, it is hard to find days and times that work for us. So, I’ve been feeling a little lost.
Then, two weeks ago, David was home, Hailey was sleeping and the weather was cool. In other words, the fitness stars aligned and made this possible.
2.5 walking/jogging (wogging) miles. Koda was ecstatic. I felt a rush of adrenaline. It was like swearing off sugar then snagging a bite of a cupcake. It was good.
I wrote it off as a momentary rush, but not long afterwards, it happened again.
3.8 miles with the whole crew.
Could it be? Are we rekindling our run-mance?
Clearly I’m not setting any speed records, but I find this feeling of wanting to pound the pavement fascinating. I won’t say I’m back in full force. I’m taking things slowly and not setting any schedule, timing or distance goals. Right now I’m just enjoying the feeling of my blood pumping, sweat dripping and legs becoming fatigued.
While part of my yearns to define our relationship- where is this going? How long will it last? – the other part of me is learning to just enjoy the ride and see where it takes me.
Do you have a favorite exercise that you always stick with?
Or do you switch things up according to your interest or the season?
Danielle @ Long May You Run says
Who says you have to have a committed relationship with one form of exercise? Just because it works for some people doesn’t mean it works for everyone. You should do what you enjoy… afterall the point is that you’re doing *something*, right?
That being said, I’m a committed runner, though I’m a little afraid as to what my first winter in Chicago is going to do to that 😉
Kate says
Running is my only long-term exercise commitment, but I dabble in other things as well. I’ve been fairly consistent with yoga this year, too (it helps that my next door neighbor is an instructor and has a basement studio, so that makes it easy to take a class once a week). During the summer I hike a lot, and during the winter I snowshoe a lot. I go through spurts with strength training as well, though that is one that I need o be more consistent on.
Maureen says
My go-to workout is TRX. I go at least 4 times a week. But I do enjoy running and need to make more time for that as well. Glad you’re rekindling your love of running. 🙂
Tiff @ Love, Sweat, & Beers says
As long as you’re currently loving something, right? 🙂 I think it’s best to switch it up anyway. You get better results (at least I do), and it’s easier on the body than the same-ol-thang over and over. I always lift weights, but I regularly change my routine and throw in different types of cardio or circuits. Lotsa change over here.
Karen says
I try and get in new workouts (from the husband) but I am usually a treadmiller for cardio (or turbo fire) then totally gym rat for weights.
Chrissie says
Although I am a committed runner, I see no problem with hopping from exercise to exercise. I must say though, fall is the best season for runners. 🙂 Enjoy!
Lauren Michalak says
Run-mance, you’re the cutest.
Gcroft says
I have my favourite workouts, and then I hit a plateau. Then I either take a break or switch things up, and a few weeks later, find myself going back to my favourite workouts again!
katie says
Switch it up girl! I teach yoga sculpt now so I suppose I won’t completely fall off the yoga bandwagon, but I think its good for your body to switch it up. Enjoy the runs! Don’t judge yourself, just embrace it!

I had a terrible time sticking with workouts. I did manage to train for a half marathon, but I had a training buddy that did all the runs with me. Now, I go to crossfit religiously and i never have a hard time getting myself to show up. I look forward to it. Its such a variety of things that we do in the workout that I never get bored!
Ashlee@HisnHers says
I go back and forth with what I’m loving at any given time. Over the summer it was STRENGTH, last Spring it was plyometrics, earlier in the summer it was HIIT and now it is running. I think it’s good to switch it up!
Gina says
I just became a runner in January of this year. I am currently training for my first half marathon (less than 2 weeks away) and I definatly am feeling tired of the same ol routine! I am not sure what I will do after the half but I know I will at least run some of the time. I am excited to start doing some other things. I did buy some resistance bands off of Amazon and saw some workouts online to do with them so maybe that will be fun for awhile.
Tina @ Best Body Fitness says
You know where I stand with this. I’m a self diagnosed Exercise ADD gal myself. I just like too many things. Although I’m where you were with a yoga obsession currently.
Heather @ What Does She Do All Day? says
I kind of suffer from exercise ADD, but I mostly stick with running since it’s free (after the shoe purchase of course). I don’t have a gym membership so I’m limited to what I can do at home. I do Stroller Strength two times a week and run 2-3 times a week. I just bought a Ballet Beautiful DVD to do in the winter when Stroller Strength isn’t going on.

Yoga is pretty constant in my life, but my other workout interests seem to come and go. Sometimes I’m really interested in strength and toning type classes, then I’ll get into a kick where I want to run (this usually lasts about 4 days). Whatever works, I guess!
Kelli H (Made in Sonoma) says
I think I’m with you on the exercise ADD. I do it too. I’ll try something and stick with it for a while and then get tired of it and want to try something new. My newest adventure has been running. Last Sunday I ran my first ever 6 miles and thought I was going to die, but I also loved it! My only goal is to get in 20 miles per week, whether it be running or walking or hiking, I don’t care. 🙂
Rebecca @ Strength and Sunshine says
I just stick with weight lifting, yoga, and occasionally cycling. I am content with these and love them!
Elle @ The Clean Project says
I always lift weights, but I totally have cardio ADD too
char eats greens says
Sounds like a good intro back into it. I always love running, but will take breaks when school gets busy or hip flexors don’t cooperate (come on, hip flexor!). I DO want to get into yoga again though. I think I’ll totally need that relaxation as school escalades!
Mrs FF says
My go to exercise is Step! Love it so much. When I want to switch things around I do some spinning. And a 5 -10k walk ever so often.
Sarah @ The Smart Kitchen says
I stuck to my elliptical routine for YEARS, literally, YEARS, without change. Then, I became obsessed with running, and I had my own (slightly more dramatic) break-up. Fitness classes and Tina’s Best Body Boot Camp satisfied my curiosity and ADD. 🙂 Just a month or two ago, I tried to run again–no distance or speed recorded–and I also have felt a resurgence of exhilaration from just moving…except for the days I don’t. I’m trying to avoid getting back to a place of “Must run. Only running counts.” So far…so good!
Neil Butterfield says
I love working out in the gym.
Megan Gold says
I love running and it’s my go to workout because you don’t need anything else except your sneakers!! However, after a couple weeks of running straight, sometimes getting a run in will get harder for me to complete. So sometimes I need something different- I will do some yoga poses in my room, try a new spinning class, or find some workouts on youtube. I found this list of non-boring cardio exercises too: http://watchfit.com/exercise/9-non-boring-cardio-exercises/.
It’s inspiring to see your success on balancing it all!
