What to give to the 8-year old who has everything?
As a mom to an 8 year old I can attest to the fact that we have a lot of stuff. Some stuff is great, favorites even, and we use those items regularly but I’m not always thrilled at the idea of adding another thing into the mix out of fear it will end up piled in the corner collecting dust. So what are some good gifts to give to the 8 year old that already seems to have everything? Here are some ideas I know that Hailey would love, and I’d love too!
Gift card: to an ice cream shop, to the movies, to the climbing gym, to Target. Anywhere really. 8 year olds love the freedom and autonomy that comes with getting to spend a gift card on whatever his or her heart desires.
Magazine subscription: David’s mom got the girls subscriptions to Ranger Rick Jr. and it’s a welcomed surprise every month! First of all, who doesn’t love getting mail? Secondly, they love the pictures and learning new facts. Thirdly, I love then it can be recycled and out of my house. Other great magazines for kids include National Geographic Kids, and Highlights Magazine.
A subscription or lesson that will encourage a hobby. You can purchase single kids cooking classes at Sur La Table or Flour Power. A sewing or painting class would be awesome for an art lover, as well. You could also look into horse back riding or a climbing gym or a golf lesson. It’s always a welcome treat to be gifted an experience.
Frame one of her original art pieces in a beautiful frame. So often gets put on the fridge then shoved in the back of a drawer (or the trash can). An original work of art displayed in a beautiful frame and hung on the wall is a thoughtful gift that the child can feel proud of day in and day out.
Annual membership to a favorite museum, gym, etc. This certainly falls under the category of a big gift, but for the same price as a few clunky, plastic toys, a child can enjoy 365 days to a science museum, a zoo, an activity gym, a botanical garden, etc, etc. Much like a jelly of the month club, it’s the gift that keeps on giving all year!
I hope you find these helpful and if you have any sure-fire wins, please share them in the comments!

You are a good researcher! You have a way of “connecting the dots” as you well understand people at various stages of life and what might be good for them – including 8 year olds!

My daughter turns 8 in December and most of the items on your list she has or would love! This list “hit the nail on the head” for 8 year old girls. The light up terrarium we gave to some of her friends for birthday gifts and they loved them. My daughter is a huge fan of Harry Potter So my dad used his wood lathe to make a Harry Potter wand from oak wood that looks phenomenal and the fact it’s real wood and not plastic helps bring the fantasy alive even more. Sometimes homemade gifts really are special. Thank you for sharing!

Oh my gosh we just finished reading the second Harry Potter and we are all SO into it, so I can only imagine just how incredible of a gift that WAND was! Wow, that’s beautiful!

I agree with giving experiences. I have someone who is turning 8 in December. Last Christmas I gave her a theme park pass that is local to us and for her Birthday I gave her a week drama workshop during the school holidays. I definitely think my daughter would be into the friendship bracelet maker and I know she likes scratch art. I find it gets harder as they get older to think of worthwhile gifts that they can unwrap.

A drama workshop is such a fun idea; I’ll bet that was a hit! And I agree. It gets more challenging as they get older!
