1. Sewing Camp

This week was spring break in our area. We didn’t plan to break from our regular routine but when I heard Future Fashion Designers Academy was offering a sewing day camp, I immediately signed Hailey up. She’s a crafty one and has been wanting to learn how to sew. While I had my grandmother’s machine all shined up and serviced, I still need to learn myself. She went Monday-Thursday for a few hours and learned SO much. She ended up sewing a bow, two emoji pillows, and a skirt (that she’s wearing in the picture). I’m so proud of her.

Kaitlyn and I filled the days easily, thanks to the gorgeous sunshine! We transplanted our bean plants to bigger containers (they grow fast!) and enjoyed books on the porch. I highly recommend The Gardener book. I had to pack Hailey a lunch for camp and Kaitlyn wanted a packed lunch, too, so every morning I just packed two and stuck Kaitlyn’s in the fridge. It worked out well that lunch was already made whenever she was ready for it.

2. Target Spring Girls’ Clothes

I know the mom joke is that all we do is wander the aisles of Target with a Starbucks coffee, but until this week I can’t tell you the last time I went to Target. Kaitlyn had a gift card burning a hole through her pocket though and wanted to buy these surprise-inside bath bombs she loves and some Gummie Bear face masks (goodness help me with this prissy little thing).

Anyway, while she was ohhing and ahhing over the choker necklace section, I wandered through the kids clothes and found some super great deals on basic spring kid clothes- t-shirt, skirts with built in shorts, and even LEGGINGS THAT FIT KAITLYN. 🤯 She’s long and lean and finding leggings that fit her well is impossible, but these did, and they had leg pockets.

3. Hiking

Every time I write a blog post I tell myself, don’t discuss the weather, don’t discuss the weather... but I’m only human, and the weather this week has been SO nice. 70 degrees and sunshine. My friend, (Alison who I met 9 years ago when H was a baby and I was looking for a walking buddy!) had a birthday this week and it made for the perfect opportunity to get out and get some fresh air. We completed 5 miles at Riverbend Park in Conover. It was a nice hike, right beside the Catawba River and the girls had a blast sneaking ahead of us and hiding, in order to jump out at us when we passed. Hailey and Kaitlyn slept so well that night!

4. Codeverse

David and I had a conversation the other day, a check in of sorts, about homeschool, the kids, and what we want for them. One thing we agreed on is that we’d like them both to have certain life skills. We talked about how to accomplish that, like perhaps doing intensive learning on an area or two during “summer school.” Some of these skills include sewing (inspired by Hailey’s camp), cooking a couple dishes all on their own, being able to start a camp fire, reading a map, cleaning a bathroom, learning to type, etc (it’s a long list), and one near the top of that is for the kids to learn the basics about computer coding.

Now, I am no help in this area, so I was intrigued when I heard about Codeverse. They offer one on one coding lessons for kids ages 6-13. We’ve done a lot of coding type games (from the Code-a-pillar as toddlers, to CodeSpark, to Scratch, and OSMO), but Codeverse is different because of the one on one lessons, as well as their own text-based coding language designed specifically for kids.

They offer a free trial class and Kaitlyn had hers this week. Hailey’s is next week. I tried to stay as hands off as possible and was really pleased by how incredible Kaitlyn’s instructor was- patient, excited, engaging,  helpful. After the 50 minute session, I asked what she thought (because she was in such concentration mode most of the time and I couldn’t gauge it). Well, Kaitlyn LOVED it.

5. House Projects

It’s been an exciting week around here. Not only have our caterpillars all started to form their chrysalises, our house is undergoing a change, too! Spring brings out the project side of us, and this one if a big one. We are redoing the exterior of the house.

We had our new front door installed earlier this week (no more see through glass, wahoo!), and yesterday the crew started tearing off our old siding. It is composite and we are replacing it with hardie plank siding, adding new stone accents, building a more substantial entry way/roof, and redoing the lighting. It’s going to feel like a whole new house!
