It’s been a while, hasn’t it? I love these day in the life posts both for me to look back on and to get a peek into other people’s lives. Nosy much? Why, yes, yes I am. The last time I did one of these was when Kaitlyn was 6 weeks old, and I figured it was time for a new day in the life in all it’s wonderful mundaneness that I love.
At 6:30am I hear noise from Kaitlyn’s room. I wouldn’t call it crying, but a whine/come feed me kind of sound. I go in and feed her with the lights still off and noise machine on. It takes 20 minutes then I put her back down and slink out to the office to blog. At 7:15 I realize she’s awake so I grab her and she plays around at my feet while I finish up. At 8ish I get Hailey up for breakfast. Kaitlyn is already tired so I wear her while I take the easy route and make a big batch of smoothies for breakfast.
Kaitlyn goes down for a nap and Hailey and I make our way around the house. We get dressed, I fire off a couple emails and then look to chip away at the laundry pile from our week away.
Kaitlyn wakes up just after 10- perfect timing for the day! I feed her in the playroom.
It takes a while so I have to rush to get everyone piled up and at the doctor (Hailey’s 3 year well check) by 11:00.
Some fun facts: Hailey is 3’3” tall (85%) and weighs 37 pounds (75%).
The doctor asks if we want our flu shots. A simple question right? I go back and forth with her with several questions and ultimately decide that yes, Hailey and I will get our flu shots.
I brace myself for the inevitable tears to come, but to my surprise, Hailey barely flinched. Impressive. I tell her I’m proud of her and tell her she can choose anything she wants for lunch. Her answer? “shushi”
Lunch at Whole Foods it is! I love that they have organic peppers on the salad bar because Kaitlyn got to join in too.
We are pushing it on timing and get home around 1:00. Kaitlyn snagged a short car nap, so she’s up, but Hailey is exhausted and goes right down.
The cool, cloudy day makes me feel cozy so I put on Pandora (self made Mariah Carey Christmas station), light my candle and bust out the Christmas decorations.
Have I mentioned that Kaitlyn now thinks she can walk? (she can’t) but she pulls up, lets go with one hand and inevitably falls over. She’s a bruiser.
David finds a gap in his day and I’m overjoyed. He comes home and I run out to soak up 45 minutes at a local coffee shop to work on a project I have going on. My tea is too hot to sip but for some reason having it next to me makes me feel cozy.
I’m home by 4:00 and after feeding Kaitlyn and getting Hailey up, we are all back in the Christmas spirit.
Most everything is up, but I really am bummed we don’t have a tree yet. Soon… soon.
The Christmas tunes play on, into the evening, while Kaitlyn eats and I make Hailey’s dinner.
We tag team bath and bed and the girls are down by 7:15. I come down and finish cooking our dinner, which was super easy since I picked up the parchment packs already assembled.
Not pictured: copious amounts of tortilla chips and salsa.
David takes a phone call and I grab my pump. Since we are practicing with a bottle every day it means I get some quality time with this machine.
Pumping moms, hats off to you. Really.
David and I hop into the hot tub (finally fixed after, what, 3 years?) and discuss the list of happenings going on in our life right now. I can’t hang in the heat as long as he can so I shower off and curl up on the couch with a cup of ACV and my favorite magazine.
It was a decent no tech Tuesday, but then we blew it by throwing on a Frasier just before bed. So close.
I was out by 10pm.
Sprinkle in diaper changes, a potty accident, a time out and more laundry and you’ve pretty much seen everything. It’s nothing wild, but I love it.
If you celebrate Christmas, do you have your tree yet?
Who is feeling the holiday spirit with me?!
What’s your favorite magazine?
Congrats to Catherine Jackson, Megan, Ali and Shannon for winning the Lara Bar giveaway! I’ll be emailing you today!

Sounds pretty familiar! I happen to love those uneventful days where everything just kind of flows. 🙂 Question for you: do you ever have days where the mundaneness feels, well, mundane?? I feel like I vacillate between absolutely loving my days as a stay at home mom of two toddlers, and then having days where I feel like I’m at the end of a very long tunnel and I don’t see an end in sight. (Think all day diaper changes, time outs, dishes and laundry, nap refusals, and one very tired momma!) And I also feel like there are times when I start the day out strong but then by 3 pm I’m just done. I love your positive attitude and I think there are too many negative/complain-y mom blogs out there. But…I would love to hear your perspective on those ‘bad’ days.
Brittany says
Great idea for a post because I definitely have those days! I will defintely write a post about what helps me and hope other moms chime in on it too. Thanks 🙂
Kimberly says
I have to second this idea. I love reading your blog because you remain positive even though I know it’s not all rainbows and sunshine. I would also like to hear your tips on keeping your cool all day long. There are some days where I have a hard time doing that and I feel bad when hubby comes home to a frowning wife. I’d like to have a bit of cheer for him when he walks in even if the day was hard.
Brittany Dixon says
Have you heard me mention wine? 😉 Half kidding! I’ll totally write about this because though I definitely lean toward the glass is half full, I have days I want to rip my hair out too!
Melissa says
I’m so jealous that your 3 year old naps AND is asleep by 7:15! Thanks for sharing. I’m nosy and love these sneak peaks too!
jenn says
Me too!!!! My four year old and 2.5 year old both dropped naps really young. If the 2.5 takes a nap she is up till 10 or later!
Christina says
I was just going to say the same thing! My daughter (3 in January) gave up her afternoon nap about 6 months ago (insert me crying here). Then, at night, I put her down between 7:30-8 and she’s still awake in her room for over an hour. Ahhh!!!
On a brighter note, we are decorating on Friday! Hooray!
Brittany says
I am SO grateful for my good sleeper but naps are definitely hit or miss around here. If she doesn’t nap she still has 2ish hours of quiet time in her room. If she does nap than often she will be up later at night (still in bed at 7 but not asleep until an hour or two later sometimes). However on busy days she’ll still crash hard in the evenings. We shall see if Kaitlyn gives me a run for my money 😉
Beth says
Sounds just like my days! We ha d Livie’s 3 year wellness check up on Friday too. Glad it went well! The only way I am still pumping is because I have the Medela Freestyle so I do everything while I pump and walk around – it’s crazy, but has worked great!
Jenn says
I’m weird and love these posts! Sounds a lot like my day, but I only have one child! Love it!
Brianne says
Is that typical for your 3 year old to take a three hour nap that she has to be woken from and sleep almost 13 hours at night? Just curious. Little ones’ sleep tendencies are so different!
Brittany says
I can’t speak to what is typical but Hailey is all over the place. Some days she doesn’t nap (happening more and more often) but will still have of quiet time (usually 2 hours) of quiet time in her room. On those days she falls asleep quickly (like right at 7:15). Some days she will take a long nap (3 hours? But I always have get her up by 4:15ish) and will take longer falling asleep. We still put her down by 7:15 but she will sit up and read until later (sometimes 9:30!! Crazy kid).
Rachel says
You’re 3 yr old weighs one pound more than my string bean 5 1/2 yr old! LOL You’re lucky H didn’t flinch with the flu shot. I’m taking said 5 1/2 yr old to the ped this week for what was supposed to be the flu mist. They called to inform me that they’ve run out of flu mist and only have the shot. That will not go over well 🙁
Reading this reminded me of how much babies eat! There are many things I don’t miss about having an infant, but the constant feedings top the list. It’s exhausting!
Also, supes jealous of your hot tub. I’m working on convincing the husband we should get one.
Brittany Dixon says
Good luck with the shot! I got it too and was surprised it didn’t really sting that bad. I had Hailey look at me and talk (about lunch) while they stuck her. I think it helped to distract her? Who knows! Good luck!
Elizabeth says
Love posts like this. Does H go to school? Also what made you decide to get the flu shot? I’ve always gone back and forth and never done it
Brittany Dixon says
H does go to ‘school’ 3 mornings a week. The flu shot, sigh, I’m back and forth too! I think if it was just me, I’d skip up, but with K being so little and H being in school, I opted for it this year. I’ll probably do a year by year assessment and decide.
Marjorie @APinchOfHealthy says
I want to go to that coffee shop! Looks so cozy. And I am impressed that Hailey eats sushi. I get the WF sushi almost every time I go. I can’t pass it up. So yummy!

I love these posts!!

We talked about getting our tree this weekend but totally flaked. We’re considering going up north for the holidays this year, so I think we’re still kind of on the fence, but I really want one for our daughter to see!
I’m not as much in the holiday spirit as I thought I would, probably because we haven’t put up a single decoration. I did enjoy singing holiday songs in the car the other day, though!
When’s the food post with Kaitlyn coming?? My daughter will be 7 months this weekend and seems to HATE food! We’ve tried purees and I’ve put cup up pieces of stuff in front of her, and either way, no dice.
Brittany Dixon says
I know, I’ve been slow on talking about Kaitlyn’s food! I’m sorry. I’m working on a bigger project that has to do with it, so I’ve been distracted. I am going to post about what she has been eating (and mushing around ;)) tomorrow though!

Love Day in the Life posts, and I love this time of year because of all the decorating! We’ve got our tree up and almost all of our decorations finished… actually, we technically have 5 trees, but 4 of them are small. Overkill much? Maybe. Ha ha. The kids each have a small one in their room and we have a smaller one in our family room and the big one in our play room/living room. Then we have a small live Spruce tip in our entry way. I kind of love Christmas. 😉
Brittany Dixon says
I love that you have that many trees! Can I come spend Christmas at your house?! 🙂
Melissa says
Love these posts! I have a 3 1/2 year old and almost 5 month old so I love these posts to get a little perspective on my day. No tree for us yet because we always do a real tree and try not to get it too early so it won’t dry out. We are getting ours this weekend
Jessica DeLucia says
Loved this post too! Our kids are so close in age, only boys, its super helpful. Do you just give the baby red peppers in slices and let her gnaw it? I have been cutting the babies’ (mine is 9 months) veggies into tiny pieces, but since he’s the second kid I keep being like “maybe I don’t have to cut these quite so tiny?” I feel like bigger pieces are easier for his little hands to hold. I should probably just research BLW to feel more confident with it.
Brittany Dixon says
Hey Jessica! Right now I’m doing mostly big pieces that she can grab and gnaw on. Things like the peppers she can surprisingly chew/gum little pieces off of, but it takes a while. I don’t think she is eating much of those, but it keeps her entertained and has her playing with a veggie! I will probably do more little pieces as her coordination continues to develop.
Casey says
Love your blog and love these posts [in the least creepy way possible 🙂 ]. Also, every picture of Kaitlyn cracks me up!!
LaToya says
We have our same Charlie Brown Christmas tree (it’s puny) from last year which we have not put up yet. I’m trying to stretch it out as long as I can because B is 9 months old and he’ll be into it every day.
I’ve never been a fan of Christmas, I always get the blues around this time (lack of sunshine, warm weather), but having kids makes it a little more bearable for me.
Your pictures and day in the life posts are always so good!
Brittany Dixon says
Oh, I’m sorry you get the cold weather blues! Too many cloudy days in a row sometimes gets to me, but Christmas music and scented candles help 😉 Sending you some of my (excessive…) holiday cheer!
Lindsey @ Simply Lindsey says
I love these day in the life posts! We haven’t decorated for Christmas yet, but plan to tonight or tomorrow night. We have a small fake tree since we’re in an apartment and a few other decorations.
Christy @TheMuddyApron says
I love your day in the life posts.
We took out our Christmas decorations the day after Thanksgiving. Mainly because it’s so much more special with kids now that we want her to enjoy it as long as possible. The tree will come next week and we’ll write a letter to Santa tonight. So much to do!

Love these posts! I have a 2.5 year old and 7 week old and love reading how other mom’s do it. Your girls are adorable!

Hi…
I’m just curious about a comment you made about naps…if H doesn’t have a nap she is playing quietly in her room for 2(ish) hours. Wow…that’s awesome! Did that take some work/time to set that up? Does she do it on her own or have you had to ‘create’ that quiet time?
Thanks!
Brittany Dixon says
Honestly, she did it on her own. I think I got lucky! The girl likes her quiet time (with her cousins this weekend she told me she needed to rest and went into a room to look at books for an hour until I came to get her). I always have had a set nap time and when watching her on her monitor I’d notice that sometimes she slept and other times she ‘reads’ or plays with dolls in bed. I never really acknowledged it and to this day, I just say it’s nap time (though sometimes she pitches a fit about not wanting to nap, but I push through) and we read then I close her door. Sometimes I’ll hear her jump out of bed to get something and run and bring it back to bed. I don’t think she knows she can get out of her own room because I’ve let her play quietly for 3 hours before and she never tried to get out. Maybe I drive her crazy and she likes to be left alone? HA. So, that was wayyyy wordier than I intended, but I hope it answered your question!

I’ve been feeling the Christmas spirit a lot these last few days! I love it. The chilly and cloudy weather we’ve been having has definitely helped. Yesterday I cranked the Michael Buble Holiday station on Pandora and got to work on some Christmas gifts I’m making for friends. It was so fun.

I love that Hailey requested sushi for her special lunch. How is it that a 3 year old has a refined enough palate for sushi and I do not? 😉
I love Coastal Living Magazine. It’s really relaxing to read about the coastal cities I want to visit (and/or move to) and has some great ideas for decorating.
Jessie says
I see photos of Hailey and think that she & Lyric are the same size but nope! Lyric is such a teeny little thing. Under 3 feet and only 27 pounds! Crazy.
Anyway. Love these posts and along with other moms, I am so jealous of the great sleeper you have there!
Emily says
Fun, I always like reading these day in the lifes. Even though I don’t have a blog, I typed up a DITL when Avery was about 10 months old and Parker was almost 3. I think I might want to do it again – now that there’s a little more variety in our day – less naps, no more breastfeeding (sniff!) more part time writing work on my end.
Heather says
I love it, it sounds like a perfect day! I know all about the pumping, I did it exclusively for the first month of Elizabeth’s life and then I did it for the next year after that, several times a day especially once I had to go back to work. It is a lot of work, but well worth it.
I am definitely in the Christmas spirit this year! We got our tree on Sunday and it has lights and some ornaments, but I really can’t get to everything in one day. It is a week long process in my house to put up the tree. I am hoping by next year when Elizabeth is really loving Christmas I will put up decorations everywhere and outside, but that is fairly ambitious. We will see how it goes.
Kristine says
So funny … I’m pumping now while reading your post. Working mother and still producing, so it is working out! I actually enjoy the ‘breaks’ at work. Gives me a breather and time to do some other things. I’m sure a few people on phone calls have wondered what the noise was in the background!
Katrina says
Beautiful! You are growing a tall little girl Britt! Hahah I was 3’3″ in like.. the first grade lol Is David’s side of the family tall?
Love these posts, you’ve got a beautiful family 🙂

Wow! I’m always surprised to hear how big other 3 year olds are because my girl is tiny still haha. 36″ and 28lbs.

I also listen to the Mariah Carey Holiday Station. Good tunes! My 4 month old loves when I sing to her 😉
