I’ve been out of town for 17 of the 30 days so far in July. That’s just crazy. However, at least that explains why I’ve felt all over the place and less than organized. I’m not complaining; I’ve had some great times this month and seen some beautiful places!
Now, we’re home and trying to settle back in. Though I dread the giant pile of laundry awaiting me, one thing I don’t mind is an empty fridge.
I thoroughly enjoy starting from scratch and loading up on fresh foods to help get our healthy eating back on track. Yesterday Hailey and I hit up the farmers market and Harris Teeter with a plan. We executed is flawlessly.
From the farmers market, we stocked up on produce. Zucchini (extra for zucchini bread, okra for roasting, grape tomatoes, figs for Hailey, bell peppers, avocados, onions and cucumber. All for $22. <3
The grocery store was necessary for a bit more produce: cherries (on sale!), lots of romaine (it’s salad week here at the Dixon’s!), baby spinach and carrots.
The dairy/other section included cottage cheese, Greek yogurt (Fage was on sale), feta, cheddar, sour cream, guac (love the individual packets!) and a new type of hummus to try (cheaper than my beloved Sabra!).
Then, there was the protein section. This week’s menu is full of good eats, including chicken, shrimp, salmon and steak. We’re living high on the hog this week, for sure! Additionally, I picked up black beans, tuna fish and eggs.
We picked up some other necessities, like bagels, Happy Baby Puffs, Newman’s Caesar dressing and Mexi corn. Then, of course, there was the obligatory fun item.
Even since I saw this spray olive oil at my mom’s house, I wanted it, and Christmas just couldn’t come soon enough, darn it
Now I sit with a full fridge and a week full of healthy at home meals for a grand total of $128.03. Considering this will cover all our meals (minus David’s lunches) through Saturday, I’m quite proud of that number.
What are your weekly staples?
You can always fine eggs, hummus, carrots, onions and peppers in my cart each week no matter what is on the menu!

We use that olive oil spray! Looks like a great haul. I need to go shopping later and am working on my list now. Thanks for some inspiration!

We must always have bread, milk, spinach, PB, cucumbers and frozen fruit. If we are desperate, it’s enough to make a smoothie or a PB sandwich! Glad you had a great time and welcome back!

We buy almost the exact same things every week: eggs, yogurt, fruit, tons of broccoli, onions, peppers and other veggies for steaming. We’ll restock on nuts/grains when we are running low but otherwise it’s pretty predictable!

Woah! I wonder if groceries are a lot cheaper down there than up here. I think that would have been a lot more expensive up in MA. That looks like about the same amount I get for over $160.

Hitting up sales (cherries for 2.99 instead of 6.99) and the farmers market really helped me out yesterday! Plus, I don’t buy large quantities of meat which helps 🙂

Random question unrelated to this post….sorry. When you went away for the weekend what did you do with the milk you pumped while you were away? Did you bring it back with you or toss it? Im thinking about taking a weekend trip but I really can’t do it if I will have to just toss all the milk I pump. I would love some advice!
Brittany says
I wish I had advice! I threw out all the milk I pumped because I didn’t want to mess with keeping it cold and taking it on a plane. Plus, since I only have about 2 months left of nursing, I didn’t need to keep it for the stockpile. I’d imagine if you were driving, it’d be a lot easier to keep the milk than flying!

Brit-
What is Mexi Corn? Do you make it or does it come already made? Sounds yummy!
Brittany says
I bought it canned for a southwestern salad later this week. It’s in with the regular corned canned, but has black beans and peppers in it, too 🙂

Wow, you guys have been gone for lots of July! Crazy.
I always love restocking on groceries.
My staples are definitely almond milk, eggs, nut butter, fresh produce, greek yogurt, and some sort of meat or protein option.
Liz @ Southern Charm says
Eggs, carrots, bananas, apples and kale are my weekly staples!

Love coming home to an empty fridge and knowing I gotta do some grocery shopping. I could seriously spend all day in a grocery store… even when I don’t need one thing haha.
Our staples are: eggs, fruit, veggies, milk, and some protein.
Welcome home, and good luck w/ that laundry 🙁

YUM! That is my favorite brand of hummus, probably cuz it is frequently on sale Buy One, Get One Free and is made in Michigan.

Great work with restocking the fridge. You do a great job and I love to see what you get to restock the fridge with.
