Eggs. If youβve been reading here for more than a minute you know I eat a lot of them. Right up there with Bubba Gump and his shrimp, I like βem scrambled, poached, boiled, basted, fried, smothered in hollandaiseβ¦ the list goes on. I feel incredibly fortunate to have friends that have chickens and provide me with awesome eggs on a regular basis. These eggs come from βhappyβ chickens (as David calls them) where they are free to roam and enjoy their lives. However, since we eat a decent number of eggs, I sometimes fly through their generous donations and need to pick some up at the store.
…But have you seen the options at the store? Itβs completely overwhelming and hard to distinguish which labels mean something and which are just fluff (Iβm looking at you βnaturalβ). Here is a great info graph I found to help navigate the meanings (click to enlarge).
Iβve spent a decent amount of time in front of the cooler section staring at egg options, so when I was offered a chance to try out Pete and Gerryβs Organic Eggs, I jumped at the opportunity to learn more about what the labels mean and taste this new-to-me brand.
It didnβt take long after I visited their website to get a solid feel for this awesome company. Eggs are one food Iβve found you can really taste a difference between conventional and quality. So when Iβm buying eggs at the store, while I do care about labels, the one thing Iβm most concerned about is TASTE. Pete and Gerryβs eggs taste like you picked them up at your local farmers market. To test them out, I decided to try my hand at a fancy breakfast Iβve been thinking about lately and cook an egg inside an avocado.
For as fancy as I thought it looked, it was quite simple to make.
Just remove the pit then slice off a little on the bottom of each half to create a flat resting spot. Carefully crack the egg into the center of the avocado.
Bake at 425 degrees for about 15-20 minutes then devour! This dish would be great item for a brunch or having guests over because you could make a whole bunch of them at once, they look impressive and they fill you up!
The egg really shines in the dish with its creamy yolk and it kept me full for hours.
The people at Pete and Gerryβs really focus on quality, ethical practices which I find impressive. They are also pretty awesome people and want to give away $100 Visa gift card to one of you! To enter, all you need to do is leave a comment telling me why you love small family farms.

I love small farms because I feel like I’m getting the best quality while helping out honest, hardworking people!

I love small farms because they benefit everyone- the consumer, and the producer! Not to mention I feel like everything they do is a labor of love. And the food just tastes better!
Lexi says
I love small family farms because they are concerned with creating good, wholesome food while providing quality lives for their animals and using sustainable practices. I also love visiting family farm stands at markets and talking to the owners about their businesses. Often they are so passionate about their practices, which I admire.
Lindsay says
I love small family farms because they usually feed their families off their farms too so they take pride in their crops. I’ve seen documentaries where workers say they would never eat anything off the large farm they work on.
Urban Wife says

Joanna @Makingmine says

Michelle @ Fit. Flexible. Fabulous. says
We call them ‘happy’ chickens, too! I only buy eggs (as well as ground beef) from our local farmers market. The packaging/claims on eggs in the grocery store can be confusing and misleading.
The video on Pete and Gerry’s website looks fine and dandy, but I think I’ll stick with my (much more local) family farms. Eggs are nutritional powerhouses and you’re right: farm fresh eggs taste that much better!
Happy Veterans Day!
Marjorie @APinchOfHealthy says

Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries says
I like small family farms because their produce are quality, I know exactly where my food is coming from, and the people usually care about their consumers.
Monica says
Animal welfare in my food is one of the hardest things for me to deal with. We also have a friend with chickens, and I love getting my eggs from him, but they don’t always lay enough for me to get some. I have a hard time buying eggs at the store knowing the practices at a lot of the farms. Same with dairy. It is always good to buy products with animal welfare in mind!
Katherine Loucks says
You can totally taste the difference with eggs! I grew up with a small “farm” of chickens, rabbits, and goats, and I’ve never been able to eat conventional store eggs. They are so bland! I love the family farm for the heart, the passion for quality and standards, and just knowing the people your food came from!
