Today is our end of year field day for co-op. I just wrote down all the swim team meets. I also just minorly hyperventilated about how fast time goes and how big the kids seem. I absolutely love this stage with big kids and the freedom that comes along with it, but per my usual sentiment every time the season changes, I feel time whip by. Fortunately it serves as a sweet reminder to slow down and focus on what’s important.
Our summer will be a mix of swim team and tennis, hopefully getting out on the lake, family gatherings, and a week of day camp in June for the kids. They’ve done it for a few years in a row and really look forward to it. We also have a two week trip in July where we are hoping to spend a couple days in Boston on our way up to spending a week in Maine with my side of the family.
But before we get there, there’s May. And May is CRAY. Our anniversary was yesterday (14 years!), Kaitlyn turns 9, there’s Mother’s Day, end of season soccer tournaments, TKD tournament, end of year assessments for the kids, a piano recital, and swim starts. I know you other moms to activity age kids feel me; it’s a month to rival December.
Yesterday I experienced a mental log jam: so many things in my head that I needed to do, all jumbling around, unorganized. So, I mapped out our summer and then did a brain dump categorized into work to dos, family to dos, and self to dos. At least with it all out in front of me, I can start to prioritize and chip away, so though the list is long (isn’t it always?), I feel more peace about it this morning.
I’m going to reimplement my pick three system, so let’s do it. Today’s three to accomplish after our end of year co-op party:
- Swing by H’s allergist to set up treatment (we did testing and found the culprit of her misery- grasses attack her furiously!) and return library books (next to each other)
- Finalize and book July trip
- Send copy to Click & Grow for a garden giveaway I’m doing next week on IG (!)
Share with me… How is May for you? Are you feeling organized lately? What’s your strategy for handling mental log jams? Any Boston with kids recs? What’s your pick three for today? I hope it’s a great Wednesday for ya!
Unrelated to everything: yesterday I made a slow cooker chicken curry recipe that turned out to be easy and excellent (for everyone but K, who ate a few bites but insisted she could taste the earthiness of the turmeric- lol). Still, I think it’s share worthy, because I definitely want to be able to make it again, so I’m adding it to my “topics to blog about” list.

Your busyness makes me stress out! You couldn’t do it if you didn’t organize so well! May has always been a busy month! Looking forward to seeing your recipe on the blog.

It stresses me out, too, ha! Probably because we just got back from vacay, too though. A few more days and I’ll sort it all out 🙂

Our schools end out mid June, so I’m looking ahead to an insane June followed by all the summer craziness! I prefer to have some scheduled downtime for summer but as my kids have gotten older- they have more commitments. Like daily drivers Ed classes all July. Eek!! I need to do a mental mind dump and start prioritizing and getting stuff done ahead of time. I’m itching to do some spring cleaning too this time of year. Your summer trip sounds fun! Happy planning!

I feel like we have more commitments as they get older, too. Swim team, TKD, etc. Toddler days were busy but it was nice not having anywhere we had to be! Hope it all goes smoothly for you! 🙂

1. Take Camryn to the doctor
2. Take Britton to her little gym class
3. Send out a headshot gallery I shot last week.
This week has been survival week since Camryn has been puking since Saturday and has to take her to the ER Monday for severe dehydration. She’s doing okay but wish she were feeling better quicker. Also now I’m experiencing some nausea for two days. Ugh
Good luck with your tasks.
Brittany Dixon says
Oh my goodness, Kelli; I’m so sorry Camryn has been so sick. I’m glad she’s on the mend and hope you stay well, too <3

My school just had our quarterly Superintendent meeting and he referred to May as “a slip and slide into summer” and I kind of like that analogy (school ends right before Memorial Day weekend for us). April feels/ felt hard and like a lot of work but I’m trying to relax as much as possible in May, and making things easier when possible. My students are starting final projects and presentations, and I have half my focus on ending the school year and the other half on summer plans and travel. We’ve got two different day camps for the boys spread out over 2 weeks (I was too late booking the overnight camp from last summer), and then will be filling much of the rest of our time with travel. I’m excited to use my free time when the boys are in camp to get a lot done around the house that I can’t get to otherwise. Other than the day camps we have no other activities, which will give us total freedom to travel whenever, wherever (great Shakira song- might need to add it to my road trip playlist:)).. I can’t hardly wait! I actually considered buying that Frontier Airlines “All You Can Fly” summer pass- going on sale for $499 per person!! but most of our travel will be road trips. Maybe next year though?
Brittany Dixon says
“whenever, wherever” haha love me some Shakira!
Sounds like you have a really nice set up for summer; a great blend of adventure and relaxing/organizing. I hadn’t heard of this all you can fly pass… interesting!

Hi! I’m Daria from New Jersey 🙂
May is my second favorite month- with October being the first. It’s my birthday month, Mother’s Day, Memorial Day (5 days off whoop whoop), and end-of-year celebrations (for me – a teacher in high school – and for my kids at their pre-school and daycare). The weather is delicious in NJ. I love all the gardening and spending time outside.
Organization: I follow the GTD system and plan months in advance. With my anxiety I feel like it gives me a sense of control to know what MAY be coming. Handling mental log jams: brain dump every morning, stream of consciousness style. I call the process “getting all the crap out of my head.” It helps a lot. Have a great Wednesday!

I’m going to google GTD system; I’m intrigued! Thanks for your comment 🙂

Boston in the summer is the best.
1.) Boston public gardens, ride the swan boats and splash in the frog pond in the common.
2.) Do the Freedom trail into the north end, see paul revere’s house and finish with a great italian dinner and cannolis.
3.) A duck boat tour and lunch or dinner at Eataly.
4.) Aquarium or Science Museum.
Brittany Dixon says
A duck tour is high on our list, as I think the kids would love it. Thank you for the recs! 🙂
