There is nothing like a new season to re-energize my approach to the kitchen. After a fun-filled and fairly schedule-less summer, I was feeling a little uninspired with meal planning. Grill a protein and throw in a vegetable had become my predictable routine. Not bad, but it was getting dull.
With the new season upon us and a new desire to lean more plant-based in our eating, my joy in the kitchen reignited. Going hand in hand with this came my need to purge and reassess my pantry contents, much like I recently did with my kitchen cabinets. As much as I tried to deny it, my pantry had become quite the disaster zone. Exhibit A:
You can see my good intentions: the canisters for grains, turntables for vinegar storage, and even an organizational bin for good measure. Still, it had turned into chaos. Exhibit B:
It is hard for me to enjoy the cooking process with such a mess hiding below the surface (or a closed door). Plus, with my new veggie-heavy focus, I needed to assess what I had and what I needed to stock up on. Though I tried to put it off for a few weeks, I knew a total overhaul was inevitable. So on a Sunday afternoon I pulled out every single item, scrubbed down the pantry, and just as in our playroom makeover, I didn’t let a single thing back in without a designated spot. It took a few hours, but the result? It felt incredible!
Gone were the piles of clutter from the floor and the haphazardly organized items. Instead, in their place: order and logic.
A few organizational items that made a huge difference: 3 tier cabinet organizers, jumbo acrylic canisters, multi-size acrylic canister set, large stacking baskets, non-skid turntable organizer (great for corners!) and chalk board sticker labels with liquid chalk.
Categorizing my pantry contents and putting each item in a proper place felt freeing. I am now able to easily see what I have and what I need. I feel prepared to get in the kitchen knowing that all my kitchen staples for healthy and organic eating are stocked and ready to be used.
Let me take you on a little tour of my favorites!
First up, my favorite visual of the pantry, the bulk goods section.
I’ve often mentioned my love for a good bulk section at grocery stores. The prices can’t be beat and I appreciate having less packaging to throw away. Buying organic flours, grains, dried beans, lentils, nuts, and other bulk items is much more cost-effective. And I won’t lie, the look of storing these items this way also makes my heart sing. I prefer the clean, clear look on the storage containers, so I label my items on the lids instead.
I really love these labels because they truly wipe off easily for when I need to switch out the contents of a canister.
Next up… Hi, my name is Brittany and I’m a tea addict.
My tea collection has its own designated shelf. Lately I’ve been loving Adagio loose leaf teas, especially the Earl Grey Bravo, but I love keeping a variety of options on hand depending on my mood. Ginger for the evenings, throat coat for sore throats, green tea for the afternoons, and green tea dandelion for when I’m feeling the need for a health boost.
As much as I love my dried beans, real life also requires the canned options. I like keeping canned garbanzo beans at the ready because they are so easy to throw on salads, on kids’ plates, and into stir fries.
They also go great in curries, which is also why I always keep coconut milk on hand. Finally, refried beans are a staple as well. I use them for taco night or for quick lunches for the girls. Just add cheese and a tortilla and they’re happy as can be!
A single snack bin works for us, as we aren’t big snackers. Right now we have popcorn and Bitsy Brain Food snack packs at the ready. I don’t buy a lot of premade soups, but usually keep a tomato option and another kid option on hand just in case. Speaking of just in case…
Mac ‘n cheese. Always.
Let’s see what else. Tuna and salmon are an easy staple to keep on hand and when I see other salad-toppers go on sale, like artichoke hearts, hearts of palm, and sun-dried tomatoes, I try to snag a couple of those as well.
Finally, there were some odds and ends I had left over (back up ketchup, BBQ sauce, etc) so I fit them all into their our “condiment” basket next to the “baking” basket.
Then I stepped back to admire my work. I’m not kidding; I sat on the floor in front of the pantry for 10 minutes just smiling at it. I’m feeling jazzed to be in the kitchen again. Excited to experiment and create. Excited to share the successes (and inevitable failures) with you.
So there you have it- my new favorite room in the house and the staples I can’t live without.
Share with me- what space is next on your organize list?

What a great space! Where did you get the clear canisters? They look wonderful.

I got some a couple years ago at Target or Walmart (I can’t quite remember). I couldn’t find them this time so I ordered them through Amazon! The jumbo one is here: http://amzn.to/2zhBpNg and the multi-size pack is here: http://amzn.to/2xOOsth

I have pantry envy. Mine is tiny! Ps: I thought the before pictures were pretty good 😉
Heather says
My staples are brown rice, tea for sure, and Mac n Cheese. I’d say it’s for the kids, but I love it, too, ha! I actually don’t have a pantry and it’s one thing that is a MUST for our next house!
Cassie says
Pasta, coffee, baking goods (sugar, flour, etc)
Amy says
My closet needs an overhaul! I cleaned it out last summer but I was pregnant and couldn’t try everything on! After two babies in the past few years, my closet is in serious need of a makeover.
Jenni says
Looks great! Mac and cheese is a definite pantry staple in our house! I always like to have extra condiments on hand too. Love how you contained them all in one basket.
Amy says
I am so jealous of your pantry! We always have mac n cheese and a few soups-great for all family members!
Erica says
Wow your pantry looks great! It is 3 times bigger than mine and I must say I am having some pantry envy right now! The issue with my pantry is I can never see/find anything. It’s organized by item type but because it is so small, the items all end up shoved together, in fact I have a second “pantry” area in a corner of my dining room… My staples are canned beans, brown rice, and pasta. Just realized I have a separate baking cupboard too for the many types of flour, sugar, etc I like to keep on hand. I love your chalkboard labels and canisters! Thanks for the links! My current to-do is my desk and office area. I work out of our loft area so I have a large baby play yard completely encircling my desk (to keep the kids from the cords) and my boxed in area is such a mess! I’m looking forward to the day (maybe a year from now) when I’m hoping my boys will sleep in the same room and I will reclaim a bedroom as a guest room/office 🙂
Dana says
Your pantry looks awesome!! Its giving me the incentive to do an overhaul in mine 🙂 Pantry staples for my family would include: extra condiments, pasta, cereal and snacks! I even made a little spot for “my stuff”…a basket for to-do’s ect since I dont have a desk 🙂 Need to get some of those clear canisters though!! Thanks 🙂
sherry says
Your ” before ” pantry looked good to me.
My staples are canned tomato products (diced, sauce, crushed, etc), black beans, rice, lentils, and recently coconut milk.
Next organizational project—the unfinished part of the basement 🙂
Brittany Dixon says
Hasn’t that been on your list for a little while now? 😉 Is that a hint for me to get all my things out of our storage space? 🙂
montessoriishmom says
It looks so pretty! This is definitely inspiration for me to reorganize my own. I kind of love organization projects though, so I don’t mind 🙂 My favorite pantry staples are definitely a variety of dried beans / lentils. I never realized how much better they taste homemade until a couple of years ago, but now I rarely use canned unless it’s just an ingredient in a soup or something. Definitely love having coconut milk and canned salmon as well!
Marjorie Crawford says
Oh that is gorgeous!😍 I sooooo need to clean out my pantry.😬
Jenn says
My staples are pasta, canned tomato’s, beans. I’m jealous of the size of your pantry!
MaryBeth says
My daughter’s room is next to be organized! I have a baby on the way and a lot of the newborn/baby things need to be moved from her room to the nursery.
Monica says
Our house did not come with a pantry, oddly enough. My dad built one for us out of our coat closet and I love it so much I also have tendency to just open the door and stare at it. Nature’s Bakery fig bars are a true pantry staple in our house – they’re filling, reasonably healthy and everyone likes them. Win! I accomplished two things on my “next to organize” list over the weekend – the kids’ playroom and my son’s exploding art supply drawer.
Stephanie G says
Wowzers‼️‼️‼️ What a difference an organized, clean pantry does for your soul. Mine currently looks like your before picture and the ongoing problem I have is I tend to buy doubles/ triples of things because I can’t remember what I have.
I also have a deep love for tea 👊🏼. My husband and I have a cup, two to three times a day. But the small boxes they come in can get out of control. They spill over and dump out everywhere…it’s an ongoing annoying mess. Thanks for the inspiration to get my act together and organize my pantry too. ❤️
Jessica says
I have some serious pantry envy right now! I have got to get some of those tiered organizers – I didn’t even know those existed! My favorite pantry staples are definitely garbanzo beans and quinoa!
Brittany Kirkland says
One of our pantry staples is canned kernel corn for salads and tacos…as well as black beans for the same reason!
The pantry and my Tupperware cabinets are next on my to organize list… and I keep a running list of all organizing projects on my phone and I’m trying to tackle one a week. I did my closet this weekend and medicine cabinet the previous weekend! I love your pantry makeover and I will be saving it for inspiration!
I don’t have a twitter so I will be looking up the official rules! Thanks!
Monica says
Wow, I can’t even imagine having a pantry like that! It’s definitely on the list for our next house. Mostly I just minimize as much as possible!

Some staples: Tea, coffee, peanut butter, beans, rice, quinoa and OATS.

Your pantry looks amazing! That is what I need to tackle next. Ugh. Such a chore. But like you said I know it will make me feel so much better when it’s done!
My pantry staples: beans, nutritional yeast, veggie broth and protein bars to take to work or for my kids to grab to refuel after sports practice and games!
Jess says
Our staples are hummus, steel cut oatmeal, lentils, chickpeas, black beans, brown rice, salsa & tomato sauce. Also, I adore those canned good organizers!!

When we looked at houses one of the biggest items on my list was a pantry after living in a little townhouse with no pantry. Of course the house we fell in love with has no pantry either! We ahve tons of cabinets though so thankfully we have plenty of space for a pantry cabinet – but it’s a huge mess!
So yes, my pantry is in dire need of organization too. My baking cabinet got an overhaul once we finished with baby bottles, and now it’s time for the pantry.
I definitely need some of these three tier organizers and the turntables for all of our cans, spices, and sauces!
Thankfully we already have tons of awesome OXO pop top canisters for flours and such. Since I’m gluten free we keep a huge variety of flours in order to create our favorite baked goods!
Paige o says
Our pantry is always overflowing. We like to have nut butters, coffe, tea, rice, mac and cheese, soups, broth, beans, lots of pumpkin, baking mixes from Trader Joe’s, and the list goes on!
Jane says
My pantry staples are tuna, gluten free pasta, and tomato sauce. The possibilities with those are endless!
Rebeca says
My staples are rice, beans, vital wheat gluten for making seitan, silken tofu; all kinds of stuff!
Ally says
Peanut butter, oatmeal, and tuna-always!!
I seem to always have soup as well.
Layla says
Wow! Your pantry looks great, and it’s full of healthy options. Mine definitely has too many “snack” items. Some staples for me are canned beans, tuna, rice, and quinoa.
Jennifer C says
My favorite pantry staples are nuts, rice, and gluten free flour. I have a big pantry, but it is definitely not this organized!
Rachel says
My pantry staple is soups or meals from Amy’s! Super yummy vegetarian options.
Amanda says
Oh man I LOVE an organized pantry! I need to re-organize mine now…my husband likes to put things wherever he sees space, despite my clearly labeled bins. Pantry and playroom are due for a good purge and update in my house.
My staples are coconut milk, mac n cheese, baked beans, pre-cut parchment sheets, and rice.
Jen says
My pantry! I’ve been meaning to do it for a while and this post inspired me. Also, the garage- maybe you’ll post about that next 🙂
Alyssa B says
I would kill for a pantry! Hopefully the next house to replace my corner lazy susan cabinet. But I always have brown rice, vegetable stock, and Kraft Mac and cheese!
Cathy says
My staples are canned beans and vegetable broth for a quick soup when necessary. Love your pantry.
Sarah says
Your pantry looks beautiful! My staples are definitely tea, canned goods like beans, and pasta and mac and cheese too!!
Lauren says
It looks great! Although your before was pretty good too.
Our condo had a pantry we converted from a coat closet and it was pretty amazing.
A pantry is one of the things this house is lacking, but we have plenty of cabinet space and a few shelves in the basement for extra staples.
We always keep canned beans and tomatoes on hand, Annie’s Mac and cheese, pasta, dried beans. Banana peppers and tuna for salads. Tortilla chips and salsa are a staple here too, great to have when we have guests with little notice too!
My freezer is a disaster, hoping to organize it when we get a standalone freezer in the next couple months. I always keep extra homemade sauce, homemade pizza dough, muffins, chili, shredded chicken, etc on hand and while it’s the biggest freezer drawer we saw, it still gets pretty disorganized quickly.
Meg Z says
I wish I had a pantry to organize! I live in an old house, with a smaller kitchen and no pantry – just cabinets. My biggest frustration is not having enough space to group my dry goods how I’d like, because I have to cram everything into the cabinet. My favorite space to organize is probably the kitchen because it’s the most-used room in my house. Unfortunately it’s also my biggest frustration because I am the only one who cares to keep it organized.
Nichole says
Next organization task is my girls closets and drawers….yikes! My fav pantry stock item is chicken stock and extra ketchup…our fam has an addiction:)
Shannon says
I LOVE your walk in pantry! We have a cabinet pantry & our staples are usually grains (white & brown rice, quinoa,) & many canned items (beans, crushed tomatoes, tuna etc.) & lots of boxes of macaroni!
Julie S says
Your pantry looks great! I will probably take a few of your ideas and try to make mine look better!
Klara Muzik says
My pantry is huge and disorganized.. It contains: peanut and almond butter (several almost empty jars), beans that expired 2 years ago, pasta, more pasta, but no pasta souse, things I actually use almost every day for a smoothie like: chia seeds, Maqui and Acai powder, Maca powder. Baking supplies: flour, sugar, corn starch, baking soda and powder. Collection of vinegars, tomato soup, cereal, Italiani Gnocchi, and about 30 different size empty glass bottles and containers that I did not want to waste and throw away, because one day, I will get to use them…
Laura says
Would love a walk-in pantry but there is no room in our retro 1950’s kitchen (which I love for different reasons!). Because of this I have been forced to keep it organized/ uncluttered and only buy what we use and regularly rotate through (we’d run out of food pretty quickly in a zombie apocalypse). I really like the clear bulk containers you are using; typically I keep the bulk items in the plastic bags but the storage containers seem like a worthwhile upgrade. My main bulk items: canned tomatoes, honey, baking ingredients (separate shelf for easy access), beans, pasta, spices (including an entire bin just for Indian spices!, as well as space dedicated for onions, shallots, garlic, and potatoes.
Rachel says
I always have rice, beans, and pasta on hand! It’s amazing how far those 3 things will get me!!
ErikaMC says
I recently reorganized my pantry as well and it does feel so much better. I could go through my cabinets next but what I really want to get my hands on is my husband’s closet!
Caroline says
Canned beans, quinoa, and tuna are three things I always have in my pantry!
Danielle R says
Kodiak cake mix, oats, and protein bars. Oh and lately I’ve been stocking up on TJ’s pumpkin soup! 🙂

I love the way the pantry turned out! It gives me hope that one day with time and patience mine can look that organized as well.
My pantry staples are: coffee/tea, peanut butter, nutella, pasta/rice, cans of tomatoes, tuna, stock, baking supplies -flours, chocolate chips, cans of pumpkin (i tend to hoard them when they go on sale), molassas, vanilla, cinnamon, fig bars,
We’re renting right now, so we don’t have most of our stuff as it’s in storage. However, my daughters closet is on my list for a huge overhaul. Between the 2 girls, they seem to have more clothing than me, and in need of sorting what fits and what’s just taking up space. Lol 🙂

What are your favorite pantry staples?
Well I have a ton of pantry staples, but my favorite has to be pasta, my seasonings and sauces/dressings/condiments. We are a big Dipper family, so we have tons of hot sauces, salad dressings, and dipping sauces. We don’t add much salt to our dishes because we have such of variety of seasonings, which we keep on the backside of the pantry door. But I use the same white bins as you, such a clean look. I will most definitely be getting some of those acrylic bins though, love the way those look vs the Tupperware containers I have now.
Maggie C says
My pantry staples are bulk bin items and grains! Love having a variety of grains to choose from for easy sides!
Jessica says
Oooo…I love everything about your pantry!! I’m a bit jealous. I have a small one, which is better than at our old house, but I need to get creative and make it more organized.
