This simple, lettuce-less Greek side salad is a flavorful family favorite. Perfect as a side dish to any meal, or serve with grilled chicken to make it a main event.
What dish will always remind you of childhood?
For me, there are several: Mom’s blueberry cobbler. Lemon herb and buttered broccoli. Marinated chicken and noodles. Chicken schezwan. Mom’s spaghetti sauce. Fresh tomatoes with balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper. And perhaps even hot and sour soup and chicken and broccoli from Happy China II.
Bites of any of these dishes transport me back to a wonderful time in life and fill me with happy feelings.
I often think about what foods will give that same feeling to my girls one day. Food is powerful and it connects us, even through the passage of time.
Some foods I choose to make with the hope that they’ll remember them with a smile. Like how I make homemade chicken and veggie soup when they don’t feel well and how we bake chocolate chip cookies every Christmas Eve (because Santa told Hailey when she was 2 that they are his favorite).
I like to think that they’ll think back fondly on our weekly fajita night and how much they love the spaghetti sauce that mom ate when she was growing up, too.
Unfortunately I also imagine they will remember how they had to eat raw garlic at the first sign of a throat tickle, too.
There is another dish I’m confident will rank high in their memories– this Cucumber and Tomato Greek Salad.
This lettuce-less Greek salad is one of those side dishes that I’ll start assembling and then hear squeals of excitement as the girls roll into the kitchen and realize what I’m making for dinner. It’s a really simple salad that I’ve been making forever by taste, but I finally wrote down the amount of ingredients so I could share it with you.
This Greek Side Salad Goes Well With:
There is no wrong way to eat this salad- shoot, I’ve had it for breakfast more often that I can count, but here are a few of our favorite ways to serve it:
- Greek snack plate! Greek style meatballs, pita chips, hummus, tzatziki, and this cucumber and tomato Greek salad
- Gyro burgers on brioche buns with this cucumber and tomato Greek salad
- One pot Greek chicken with lemon rice and this cucumber and tomato Greek salad
- Of course, it doesn’t have to be Greek-themed. This salad goes well with any kid-friendly dinner you want a slam dunk side to go with
The best thing about this salad is that you can customize it any way you like. I like to add sliced pepperoncinis for spice if the kids aren’t eating it. Sometimes I put it over chopped romaine to make it go a little further. Sometimes I’ll add chopped red peppers if I have some on hand. Make it your own!
I hope you and your family enjoy this simple cucumber and tomato Greek salad as much as we do. Happy eating!

This looks so good! I love Greek flavors and it’s nice that this could be made in advance a bit, without worrying about wilted lettuce!

I totally forgot to mention that but you are so right- sometimes it’s even better when it is made in advanced! I’ve eaten it for breakfast the next morning more times than I can count π
Let me know what you think!

Any thoughts on what I could sub for Feta? We donβt typically do dairy!
Brittany Dixon says
Yes, you can leave it out completely! Just ad a sprinkle of salt to compensate for the lack of salty feta π
